Kristen Stake is a Portland, Maine based dance artist and poet who creates site-specific performance art. Informed by somatics and other post modern dance practices, her work is inspired by contemporary poetry, Vipassana meditation, Lisa Nelson's Tuning Scores, Steve Paxton's original research into Contact Improvisation, memories from childhood, compulsions to be seen and to hide, and a strong affection for the nooks and crannies of architecture and objects. She has performed collaboratively with dance writer and movement researcher Melinda Buckwalter, sound artist ID M Theftable, The Sisters Grumbling, Cookie Harrist and Delaney McDonough of Hio Ridge Dance, and Loren Groenendaal of Vervet Dance. Right now, she runs The Living Room, home of Moving Target Portland, with a collective of artists where she teaches Composition and Contact Improvisation. She holds an MFA from Vermont College in Poetry Writing. She is available to teach Contact Improvisation and Performance Improvisation upon request.
