Kristen Stake is a Portland, Maine based dance artist and poet who creates site-specific performance art informed by somatics and postmodern dance practices. She has performed at the School for Contemporary Dance and Thought (SCDT in Northampton, MA), at the Judson Memorial Church in NYC, the H-O-T series in Philadelphia, the Frantasia Festival of Out Music & Arts, XFest Massachusetts, Portland Stage Company, the Portland Ballet Studio Theater, and the Franco American Center in Maine.
She has an ongoing performance collaboration with sound artist id m theft able (ME) and has also performed with Melinda Buckwalter (MA), The Sisters Grumbling (ME), Cookie Harrist (CA), Delaney McDonough (NY), Loren Groenendaal (PA), Katarina Eriksson (Sweden & CA), Asimina Chremos (PA), and Kerry Constantino (ME).
After practicing ballet as a youth and modern dance as a college student, she went on as a young adult to study improvisation intensively in the Pioneer Valley of Western MA for 4 years including Contact Improvisation, Tuning Scores, Body Mind Centering, Performance Improvisation, Authentic Movement, Contemplative Dance Practice, The Underscore, and Qi Gong, with a variety of postmodern dance pioneers including Daniel Lepkoff, Barbara Dilley, Lisa Nelson, and Body Cartography. Nowadays, she attends Bates Dance Festival, Lion’s Jaw, and Bearnstow to ignite her practice, not to mention Moving Target Portland. She holds an MFA from Vermont College in Poetry Writing.
She is the Director of The Living Room Dance Collective in South Portland, ME which is an artist-run dance space that presents postmodern and experimental dance work and is home to Moving Target Portland, a community class series taught by visiting guest artists.
She teaches Choreography, Postmodern Dance Practices, and Contact Improvisation at the Living Room. She has been a guest teacher at the University of Southern Maine and Bowdoin College, where she taught Contact Improvisation in addition to a Sound & Movement workshop on nonhierarchical ways to approach dance performance with live musicians.
